Texas Campus Carry Bill (HB1893) moves forward

From the ever vigilant JR at A Keyboard and a. 45 blog (you are reading him every day, right?) reports that the bill to expand our right to bear arms has moved forward.

As JR says:

It is important to take a moment or two and check here to see if your rep is a sponsor/author of this bill. If they are, please be sure to thank them for their support in your communications. I think it is also important to add a fax to your communication efforts. Faxes and emails over the weekend, followed up with calls on Monday morning will be the most effective way of expressing your support for this bill.
Folks, I have a daughter in college now. Many of her friends are in college now. I have a 16 year old that will be going to college in a couple of years. I would feel more confident in their safety if some of their fellow students were Concealed Handgun License holders that weren't deprived of their rights at the edge of the property. The Magical Force created by the "Gun Free Zone" signs doesn't work, let's try having responsible citizens carrying firearms for a while, eh?

Please all Texas residents, contact your house representatives. If you don't know who represents you, you can find that information here.

If you are a Texan, and you support our right to keep and bear arms, contact your representative Monday morning and let them know that you expect them to support this bill.

Gun free zones do work. Violent crime is significantly lower on campus than off. Virtually none is committed with a firearm.

The other day I was at my parent's house and a friend called me. She's a school teacher at the school down the street and they were having a yard sale, and wanted me to stop by.

I took my gun off because when I saw her I stepped off the sidewalk to give her a hug.

Note I never entered the school, just stepped about 3" onto the school lawn. If I had done that with a carry piece I'd have committed a felony.

These are TERRIBLE laws!

Weer'd,

I know. In Texas, I can carry if I'm in the driveway of the high school to pick up my son but if I step out of the car and onto the sidewalk I'm in Trouble.

One of the aspect of the law that scares me is this:

A person commits an offense if the person knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly possesses or goes with a firearm, illegal knife, or prohibited weapon listed in Penal Code 46.05(a) onto the physical school premises of a school or educational institution or on any grounds or building on which an activity sponsored by a school or educational institution is being conducted, or a passenger transportation vehicle of a school or educational institution, unless pursuant to written regulations or written authorization of the School. Penal Code 46.03Think about that for a minute. If I go to a building where some school is conducting an educational activity that I am unaware of, I'm violating the law.
Even if I'm not near the activity, not involved in the activity,or even aware of the activity....I could still be cited.

Let's stop the insanity and go back to trusting people again, punishing the ones who break the law, and get rid of "zero tolerance" mentality.
