From today's Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
WASHINGTON — With Republicans fighting the idea of a government-run health insurance plan, Obama administration officials said Sunday that they are open to a compromise: a cooperative program that would expand coverage with taxpayer money but without direct governmental control.
Get that....the compromise simply involves how much government control and how much of their concept gets implemented. No discussion of removing some of the many programs that already cover health care, no discussion of rolling back governmental interference with private business, etc.
This is all too common in my opinion, the left has an agenda to implement. They try to implement it and are rebuffed, then they offer a "compromise"; they will only implement 25% or 30% of their agenda as a gesture of "compromise". Sorry but that doesn't work for me.
This tactic is very predominate in gun control. The anti-freedom, pro-ignorance crowd tries to take away most of people's firearms, but will compromise and only take away "assault weapons" or "saturday night specials". No real compromise, just a progressive implementation of their agenda. No discussion of national carry laws, no talk about rolling back the National Firearm Act, or the thousands of other laws.
What do you think....is this primarily a tactic from the left or does both sides do it?
How should we respond to these offers of false compromise?

IMHO, both sides do it on all issues. The recent "credit card reform" bill was an example. Unwary consumers will still be shafted, but Democrats can point to themselves and say "see how we protect the little guy;" the bill was pretty lame overall. If the Republicans had passed the same bill while they were in power, the Dems would be screaming about how it favored the big credit card companies.
The "health care reform" is still kicking around the same old tired ideas. Do I have an answer? No. Just allowing the uninsured to deduct 100% of their medical bills from their taxable income would seem to be a simple, fair start. Removing the "not for profit" status from most of the money grubbing hospitals would seem to be another (unless they agree to provide care to the uninsured at commonly negotiated PPO rates).
Gun laws? They do not work; don't ask for me to compromise on ANY law that does not work. Concealed carry is a compromise... honest people should be able to carry what they want without "permission" from the government.
I agree, government always asks for compromises just to pass laws that don't seem to solve any problems. Their motto is "It's time to do something, even if it is wrong."
we should treat it exactly as we treat "compromise" as touted by the Brady Campaign. Tell them to shove it.
Eventually the cartridge box will need take over duties from ballot boxes. In the end it will be the only option.
Didn't they learn from their Chairman Mao? Maybe I read the "little red book", still have the copy even...Something Mao said over and over again about eventually all power comes from the barrel of the gun. These leftists have their heroes but it's us libertarians that lean right that actually read what their heroes wrote.
Funny, isn't it?
Hitler was a militant anti-smoker, borderline vegan, loved animals, believed in collectivist socialism (albeit for a select group of people on Earth). Was strongly against firearms ownership for civilians...Fit in pretty well in the California or NY State Democratic Parties and Washington as well, I'd imagine.
Inconvenient dishes of truths, served COLD for lefties, are my specialty at times.
Not to distract from the argument but just found a great quote at beck's place regarding arguing with idjeets who'd rather nitpick about things they think they know than actually make a case. 95F In the shop. Work resumes when the sun goes down.
"For the life of me, I cannot figure out why he devotes so much time to these worthless chicken-f*ckers when there are other lists full of, shall we say, 'salvageable' people."
I'd rather deal with "salvageable people". 'Tis why I don't frequent the pages of chicken molesters nor comment on them anymore.
Morons get tiresome and they never learn, especially the ones that harbor false beliefs that they are intelligent/superior.
Never wrestle with a pig cos ya both get dirty and the pig likes it.
"Eventually the cartridge box will need take over duties from ballot boxes. In the end it will be the only option."
I hope you are wrong, and I'll do everything in my power to make sure that doesn't have to happen.
Tom,
I hear you and understand completely.
Arguing on other people's blogs was and is a.)entertaining, b.) good practice for my own blog, c.) needed to make sure there aren't people reading only one side of the story and d.) sometimes just needed to knock people down a peg.
The primary reason I continue arguing with the "un-salvageable" is their audience. As on the site OneUtah.org, there are people who have never heard the unvarnished truth about the 2nd amendment.
We have Cliff Lyon saying on the board TODAY, "I also reject your premise that owning a gun for the hell of it is Constitutionally protected right".
If we let that go unanswered, I think we will lose this fight for our rights. It is not a case of someone, somewhere is wrong on the Internet but of selecting venues and countering false information.
Keep up the commenting please. You add a "different perspective" :)
Mike W: Me too. You don't see ME crashing airplanes into buildings or going around shooting people I disagree with but historically speaking, every empire falls when the citizens think they can vote their way to prosperity instead of work.
Bob:
I can't think of any reason to build a .700 AHR except explicitly "for the hell of it". I honestly can say the same about the matchlock I've been working on and weird semi-aperture front stuffer sights. I may or may not make money off some of the things, but I also sometimes lose money but go "WHEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!" on the way to losing money cos it was a neat idea!
We put a flathead Fjord V-8 in a 6N tractor about 20 years ago to see if it'd do wheelies (it did) for the exact same reason :-) Heathen behavior but it got us in parades back then. We called her "Six Pack" cos that's where the inspiration came from. Likely should have been "Kegs O Beer" in all honesty. Old Lincoln welder powered by V-8 died...Tractor needed a motor...you stare at parts not doing anything long enough you can get some amusing ideas and some of them even work!
I never had any need to go hunt African and Latin American game for sustenance except on jobs that I took of my own free will, but I wouldn't trade doing it, even the recreational bits, for the world. Plus, hunting keeps endangered species alive, just like my Super-Combo Hunting License I buy EVERY YEAR in Texas pays for game conservation.
But as far as arguing, my sis is marred to a ranking member of the Texas donkey party and we found it simpler to not speak with each other. Notice I didn't call him a brother of any sort, even in law, because he's not my brother. Any argument with him or sis descends into a circular boredome non-argument. It's like dealing with some biologists and geologists:
"How do you know that this fossil is this old?"
"Because it was found in this strata that we think is this old."
"Why do you think that strata is that age?
"Because we found this fossil in it that we think is this old..."
Gets boring after a while.
